What the Leaf Remembered
Written September 30, 2026 at the River Trails Cafe, Troutdale, Oregon
I awoke having been a leaf in a streamTumbling rock over rockIn my dreamSettling into a valleyOf pink and blue
Was it real—imagining the color…The pink and blue and the tealLooking up at relatives fallingFrom branches I once knew
They drifted down without a soundAnd paused where I lay stillThen the current turned us roundAnd bore us past the leaning treesBeyond the shadow of the hill
I woke beneath a quilt of blueWith sunlight on my handAnd felt the water passing throughThe fingers I had spreadTo reach for land
